Dental abfractions - a literature review and hypothesis

چکیده
Original works by W. D. Miller 1 in the late 1800s and early 1900s, seem to be the earliest review in English of the erosion-abrasion issue as it relates to tooth brushing and dentifrices. Miller discussed wasting away of the tooth at the neck as "very often taking a form as though produced by a three-cornered file (p. 2).” 1 Possible causes of wasting away mentioned in the literature at that time included: toothbrushes, alkalis, acids, friction of folds of the mucous membrane, exfoliation, acid secretions of the mucous membrane, electrolytic action, defective development, and rubbing of partial clasps, among others. Ingredients used in toothpastes at that time included: pumice, oyster shells, precipitated calcium carbonate, prepared chalk, and cigar ashes. The results of Miller's two years work on the etiology of erosion were published in 1907 when he announced his belief that erosion was caused by weak acids or gritty tooth powders, or by both, assisted by the toothbrush.

Analysis of etiologic factors and periodontal conditions involved with 309 abfractions.
OBJECTIVES Non-carious cervical lesions (NCCL), also termed abfractions, have long been thought to be produced by excessive brushing. Nearly 20 years ago an occlusal etiology was proffered (Lee & Eagle 1984). Controversy still exists concerning these two concepts. The present work was carried out to verify the occurrence of signs of excessive brushing or occlusal disturbances associated with ab...

متن کاملGuided bone regeneration: A literature review
Guided bone regeneration (GBR) is a reconstructive procedure of alveolar ridge using membranes. This procedure is indicated when there is no sufficient bone for implantation, or in the case of optimal implant installation for esthetic or functional needs. GBR can be performed before implant placement, when there is not enough bone for initial stability of implants and less predictable outcomes ...
متن کاملMaintenance of Dental Implants: A Review
Objective: Successful bonding of a dental implant to bone, which was referred to as osseointegration by Branemark has been well documented. However, long-term prognosis of an implant depends on adequate maintenance and long-term care. An effective maintenance program is required to preserve the health of peri-implant tissues. Several techniques have been suggested for this purpose but it is n...
